Great musical personalities from abroad, but also renowned Greek artists with international recognition participate from the 14th to the 31st of July in the 6th Koufonisia Classical Music Festival 2021.
As the health crisis comes to an end and after months of absence of artistic events, the festival sends a message of optimism, presenting five special concerts.
Five nights of quality music for everyone, young and old, lovers and explorers: opera recital with the famous Russian opera diva Olga Peretyatko, accompanied by pianist Matthias Samuil, piano recital by the famous German-Japanese soloist Alice Sara Ott, violin-piano recital with two great Russian musicians, Sergei Krylov (violin) and Evelyne Berezovsky (piano), clarinet-piano recital with the renowned Greek musicians Spyros Mourikis (clarinet) and Natalia Michailidou (piano), and for the first time in the history of the festival a tribute to Greek poetry: A journey from antiquity to the present day through the compositions of George Kouroupos, performed by baritone Tassis Christogiannopoulos, pianist Giannis Tsanakaliotis recited by Ioulita Iliopoulou.
The official start of this year's event has been preceded by an introductory educational activity that aims to connect the young people of the island with classical music:
In collaboration with the Athens State Orchestra - and with the support of the Public Benefit Enterprise of the Municipality of Naxos and the Small Cyclades and the Costopoulos Foundation – the festival presented an educational program on June 11 for the children of the Elementary School of Koufonisia with the participation of the brass and percussion quintet "Metallon" of the Athens State Orchestra. The following afternoon, June 12, the quintet gave a performance with free admission for children and their parents.
After five consecutive events (2016-2020), the Koufonisia Classical Music Festival has been established as one of the most important cultural events of the summer in the country. With distinctive devotion and consistency and despite the adverse conditions and the blow that the cultural institutions inevitably suffered from the Covid-19 pandemic, the Festival did not fail to give a dynamic presence in 2020, presenting a multi-themed program of events, under the artistic supervision of its founder, conductor and pianist Kornilios Michailidis.
