BLACKBOX JAZZ MUSIC FESTIVAL
Vocal Edition
18th, 19th, 20th, 31st October & 1st November
Literary Society Parnassos, Karitsi Square
Autumn has arrived and the BlackBox Jazz Music Festival, the jazz music celebration that received an emotional reception in February 2024, is just around the corner with its new venture emphasizing the human voice.
Continuing to explore and mix on stage different idioms and manifestations of jazz music, the BlackBox Jazz Music Festival: Vocal Edition throws its spotlight on vocals, on the human voice and its importance, both as a carrier of melody and meaning (thus as an attractor of emotions!) and as a musical instrument with infinite possibilities and achievements in the field of jazz.
The BlackBox Jazz Music Festival: Vocal Edition will take place in the hospitable hall of the Literary Society Parnassos, in Karitsi Square, and will host established and emerging jazz artists in 10 unique concerts.
The BlackBox Jazz Music Festival: Vocal Edition starts on 18 October with Savina Giannatou and pianist Spyros Manesis. The singer improvises with the pianist, performing songs from Southern Italy, Sardinia, Corsica, Corsica, Lebanon, Spain, Greece and North Africa in different languages and idioms. On the same day, the "Drums & Voice Jazztronica Duet", the project of vocalist Angeliki Toubanaki and drummer, composer and sound designer Ilias Doumanis, will appear on the stage of Parnassos, who will take us from the natural sound of percussion and vocals to the polymorphic dimension of electronic music with a highly experimental and improvisational mood!
On Saturday, October 19, the BlackBox Jazz Music Festival welcomes Manto with YFG, the musical vehicle of virtuoso bassist, teacher and composer Giorgos Fakanas to take us on a journey to fusion soundscapes and the magic of film music. On the same day, the quartet of Stathis Anninos (Stathis Anninos: piano, keyboard, arrangements, Michalis Tsiftsis: guitar, Kostas Patsiotis: double bass, Thanos Hatzianagnostou: drums), who with the collaboration of singer Katerina Polemi will guide us through "Sounds Of The World", a multifaceted journey from Savvopoulos to Villa-Lobos.
The first cycle of the festival closes on Sunday 20 October with the quintet of Elli Paspala (David Lynch: saxophone, flute, Takis Farazis: piano, Petros Varthakouris: double bass, Alexandros-Drakos Ktistakis: drums), in jazz standards, reminding us with her unique voice. On the same evening, the singer Spyros Kleissas will perform, accompanied by the pianist Giorgos Tsolis, in jazz standards and small surprises.
Just before the end of October, on Thursday 31 October, the lights of the BlackBox Jazz Music Festival will be turned on again on the stage, to be joined by Nasia Gofa and her Jazz Tales band (Thomas Mitroysis: guitar, Kostas Patsiotis: double bass, Anastasis Gouliaris: drums, Stefanos Kozanis: piano) and present us, apart from her recently released multi-faceted album "Erkina", compositions from a wide musical spectrum. She will be
succeeded on stage by the award-winning Czech singer, composer, multi-instrumentalist and visual artist Milli Janatkova together with Czech saxophonist Štěpán Škoch, with her new audiovisual project "In Rhythm", in which natural instruments, tradition, improvisation, pre-recorded loops and video art are combined under her guidance and follow the inspiration of the moment.
On Friday 1st November we will enjoy two more unique concerts: the evening will be opened by the trio of saxophonist Dimitris Tsakas (Kimon Karoutzos, double bass, Alexandros-Drakos Ktistakis, drums), with the voice of Anastasia Konstantinidou in a performance of jazz music and speech: the emphasis is on the legacy of Charlie Parker, combined with poetry and narration. Their performance cannot be without compositions from the trio's first album, which has just been released. Next up is the appearance of Irini Konstantinidou and her Quintet (Markos Haidemenos: piano, Kimon Karoutzos: double bass, Panagiotis Kostopoulos: drums, Roman Gomez: bandoneon), who will present cool songs from her recent recording entitled "Nothing To Lose".
