Sophocles Oedipus Tyrannus
Directed by Simos Kakalas
One of the greatest ancient tragedies, "Oedipus Tyrannus" by Sophocles, is presented on tour throughout Greece, directed by Simos Kakalas, with Yannis Stankoglou in the title role and Marilita Lambropoulou as Jocasta. Produced by Theatrical Events Iasmos.
Joining them is a cast of notable actors: Yannis Dalianis, Christos Malakis, George Amoutzas, Konstantinos Moraitis, Panagos Ioakeim, and five other actors. The on-stage music is by Fotis Siotas, who has also composed the music for the performance.
The translation is by Giorgos Blanas, set design by Giannis Katranitsas, choreography by Sofia Paschou, lighting design by Alekos Giannaros, and mask design, which is an integral element of the performance, by Martha Foka.
Oedipus is confronted with his fate, which he has been trying to escape since birth. The prophecy received by his father, the king of Thebes, Laius, is confirmed in the worst way possible. Oedipus becomes unknowingly the patricide, marries his mother Jocasta, and ascends to the throne of Thebes himself. The tragic truth is soon revealed, confirming that a person cannot escape their fate.
"Oedipus Tyrannus" is considered one of the most beloved and frequently performed works of ancient Greek literature, both in our country and worldwide, carrying the Greek spirit and its timeless messages to all of humanity.
Note from Simos Kakalas
Never before in the history of humanity have we "seen" so far into the universe and so deeply into ourselves. Often, on the brink of disaster, we realize that the evil we fight against is ourselves. The face of Oedipus is humanity itself reflected in the mirror. Having found the culprit, he is faced with the imperative of making a choice, even at the last moment, even after making the greatest mistake.
In this performance, seen as a ritual of purification, a group with masks of elders forms a chorus that revolves, mourns, and agonizes. Through this dance, the tragic characters of Oedipus, Jocasta, Tiresias, and Creon are revealed.
