"The Salzburg of the Aegean"
«We are thrilled to be in Greece, we are thrilled to be in Athens and, for so many years, we are thrilled to be in Syros building culture through the classical music form.»
- Eilana Lappalainen-Tiboris at the Athens Press Conference on April 19 2018.
The International Festival of the Aegean, which takes place annually on the Island of Syros, Greece, was founded in 2005 by the Greek-American music director Peter Tiboris. Now entering its fourteenth season, the Festival attracts world-class artists from dozens of countries, and has become a summer destination for lovers of the arts from Europe and beyond. In 2011, the Festival was named "Best cultural organization operating in the wider region of Greece" by the Awards Committee of Music Critics of the Union of Greek Theatre and Music Critics, based in Athens, Greece. In December 2014, the Festival was awarded the Gina Bachauer Award as Festival of the Year. Peter is joined in the yearly Festival by Eilana Lappalainen who is Artistic Director of Greek Opera Studio and a frequent artist performer during the Festival.
MidAmerica Productions and MidAm International are the primary producers of this Festival in Syros in cooperation with the Municipality of Syros - Ermoupolis; George Marangos, Mayor; and Thomai Mendrinou, Vice-Mayor of Cultural Affairs. MidAmerica Productions was founded in 1983 and has produced over 1300 concerts worldwide, over 550 of which have been in historic Carnegie Hall in New York City. MidAm International was founded in 2012 and produces and presents concerts in Florence, Verona, Venice, Vienna, Salzburg, Paris, Prague, Berlin, Budapest, Lisbon, Porto, Macao (China), and Syros.
