In August, Athos Danellis and Athens Shadow Theater Company return to the SNFCC to set up stage at The Dome, and bring a series of selected plays from the Greek Shadow Theater repertoire to life, inviting young and old alike to follow the adventures of Karagiozis and laugh their hearts out. The shadow puppets and scenery featured have been created especially for these shows by the puppeteer, painter and puppet-maker Yannis Papadopoulous – Giouvan.
Karagiozis and the Great Sultan (Sunday 02/08)
One of the most successful comedies of the original series, with laugh-out-loud scenes and an unexpected twist. Karagiozis puts his life in danger when he accidentally discovers the secret of the strange Sultan, whom only a handful of people have ever met.
Karagiozis' last feast (Sunday 09/08)
After a long stretch of unemployment, Karagiozis finally finds a good job at the mansion of Mr. Aristovoulos. He will, however, run into unexpected difficulties, and get into all kinds of trouble!
The Sorcerer of India (Sunday 16/08)
An exotic 1960s remake of the classic “Prophet”, which was one of the most popular comedies of the Shadow Theater repertoire. “The Sorcerer of India” (aka “The Indian's Tomb”) won audiences over, and stole the hearts of thousands of delighted viewers.
Angelo the brigand (Sunday 23/08)
Performed for the first time
An original bandit adventure comedy, written in 2017 by Yannis Papadopoulous – Giouvan, in the style of pre-war “fustanella” plays, that are still very popular with shadow theater audiences.
Oi Sarantapente Giannides / Forty-five Giannides (Sunday 30/08)
An urban Shadow Theater comedy, written by Athos Danellis in 1998. It was first performed in 2000 and was a great success, even attracting the praise of master Karagiozis puppeteer and teacher Vaggos Korfiatis.
Performances take place in Greek.
Design - Implementation: Athos Danellis, Athens Shadow Theater Company
Athos Danellis, one of the few remaining karagiozopaichtes – puppeteers of the Greek traditional shadow theater – met and fell in love with Karagiozis under the tutelage of old masters of the Art, performing and studying Shadow Theater. In 1998, he founded the Greek Shadow Theater Archive, with the purpose of restoring and utilizing theatrical texts and historical data of the Greek Karagiozis tradition. Athos and his Athens Shadow Theater Company have taken part in several festivals, both in Greece and abroad.
From 1998, he holds regular performances at a number of theater spaces, where he presents rare plays from the forgotten Greek Shadow Theater repertoire, as well as his own original creations.
